Unchanged background color in dark mode for captions of embedded Wikimedia Commons files
[edit]Switching to dark mode changes the specified background colour for the quote-box text (parameter: bgcolor) to black, but that for the Wikimedia file-caption text (parameter: background-color) remains unaffected. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wichita_Lineman#Background_and_content Birdman euston (talk) 02:49, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- On closer examination, the specified background colour of the file-caption text does change in dark mode, but to white not black. Birdman euston (talk) 02:58, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- The background color of the file caption is explicitly set to "background-color:AliceBlue;" in a div tag in that article. I removed it, and dark mode works fine. I don't think this has anything to do with the quote box template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:22, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks - it's a Wikimedia file causing the problem, to be sure. Since editors often embed them in Wikipedia quote boxes, it's worth noting here that Wikimedia files' non-default background colours are apparently not (fully) compatible with Wikipedia's dark mode at present. Birdman euston (talk) 06:02, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- I am aware of problems with transparent SVG files, but I don't see anything wrong with the file on that page in dark mode, now that the custom caption background color has been removed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:13, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Font size is too small
[edit]The font size is terrible, I have to squint my eyes. It is 88%, which is on the brink of the allowed size in MOS:SMALLFONT, 85%. Quote text is not secondary text in Wikipedia, readers will absolutely want to read it in full, so there is no valid reason to make it this small.
I suggest to increase to at least 13px (~93%) on Vector. Jack who built the house (talk) 13:13, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with using a higher font-size percentage, but when I tried to take the font size to 100% for accessibility, the pitchforks came out and I reverted the change. Maybe 93% would have more support. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:08, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I thought this had been fixed but I guess I just haven't encountered a quote box template in a while.
- Where's a better, larger place to have this discussion, if the obscurity of this talk page was one of the main objections last time around? Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Text formatting? Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Accessibility? Belbury (talk) 11:24, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
- The best place is here, with notices at other talk pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:39, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

This fixes {{reflist}}. There was an extra newline between the backlink and the citation.
@TheDJ: I don't see why display:block
was added. The problem affects the bottom half list items in the boxes in WP:REPEATCITATION. 172.97.141.219 (talk) 08:28, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- What do you mean, the template realist doesn't use quotebox ? —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:16, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Ah I see what you mean now. The page WP:REPEATCITATION should not be using template quote box. It is not making a quote, it is giving an example, and usage of the quote box template in way for which it was not designed, is likely to create problems like this. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:19, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- I chose to use {{qb}} over {{qf}} to avoid adding padding that wasn't there. {{box}} doesn't work in dark mode, whose fixing was my goal. What should we use on WP:Citation overkill, WP:Citation underkill and WP:Contort the citations?
- If
in way for which it was not designed
, why iscite
in the templatestyles? The previous wikitext used<blockquote>
with night-mode-unfriendly inline CSS, so the previous author probably somewhat considered it to be a "quote". 172.97.141.219 (talk) 09:22, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- I mean
{{qb|1=<ref>{{citation|title=test}}</ref>{{reflist}}}}
should have "test" on the same line. 172.97.141.219 (talk) 09:20, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
